Nine of the twelve lanes came off this week and only two paid more, which puts the entire board under a dollar a road mile for the first time since this report began: Atlanta to Chicago leads it at about $0.97 a mile over 693 miles, where the best-paying lane has held between $1.08 and $1.23 every previous week. Houston to Los Angeles is thinnest again at about $0.50 over 1,536 miles — short lanes almost always carry the higher per-mile number, and it is the long hauls that reward a full load.
One caveat on volume: the lane counts behind this report are a 24-hour reading, and this one was taken on the Labor Day Monday, so treat the week-over-week comparison as soft. The rate picture does not depend on it. Worth naming there — Houston to Los Angeles held at $700–$850 after falling four weeks running, the first week since the start of August that it has not given ground. If you have units waiting, Atlanta to Dallas is the one to move, off 20% to $650–$750.
