Lane counts came back this week to about where they stood before Labor Day, which fits last week's caveat that the holiday reading was soft. Rates recovered only in part: four lanes paid more than last week, three paid less and five held, but eight of the twelve still sit below their end-of-August level. The rebound was concentrated — Houston to Los Angeles is up 26% to $900–$1050, its best level since the August 10 report after four weeks of falling and one holding, and Seattle to Los Angeles and New York to Miami firmed by 14% and 12%.
Per road mile, the whole board stays under a dollar for a second week: Atlanta to Chicago leads at about $0.97 a mile over 693 miles, and Chicago to Los Angeles is thinnest at about $0.50 over 2,013 — short lanes almost always carry the higher per-mile number, and it is the long hauls that reward a full load. If you have units waiting, Boston to Miami is the one to move: it came off 14% to $1000–$1200 while its lane count barely changed, which reads as a softer price rather than thinner freight.
